The year is 1946 and author Juliet Ashton is looking for a subject for her next book. It begins to take shape when Dawsey Adams from the recently German occupied island of Guernsey writes to her with a question.

What follows is a novel consisting of letters between Juliet and members of “the Guernsey literary and potato peel pie society.” The society was created as an alibi when a group of islanders were caught breaking curfew one night, by the Germans.

The letters are written with warmth and humor and give the reader fascinating insight about the islanders’ lives on Guernsey Island during the wartime occupation.

Discussion Question:

What did you think of the relationship between the inhabitants of Guernsey Island and the German soldiers during the occupation?
